Multiple Teams · Varsity Softball Has Strong Showing at Sunrise Mountain Tournament


The varsity softball team wrapped up the Sunrise Mountain Tournament with a 4-1 record. After beating Greenway 6-2 on Thursday, Ridge beat Prescott 17-2 and Desert Edge 4-1 on Friday to finish pool play. On Saturday, Ridge began the single elimination round with a 10-0 win over Rincon (Tucson) before losing 4-1 to Pinnacle.

Offensive leaders for the tournament were Jailene Carpio (8 hits and 6 RBI), Mackenzie Whitten (8 hits, double, home run, 8 runs), and Payton Alsobrooks (7 hits, 2 doubles, triple, 5 RBI).

On the mound, Giselle Juarez was 2-1 with a save, 36 strikeouts and a 2.22 ERA. Shaina Martin was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA.

MOUNTAIN RIDGE 17 PRESCOTT 2

Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions jumped out to an early lead on Prescott and captured a 17-2 victory on Friday at Pioneer Park #5.

The game was decided quickly as Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions exerted its will early with 14 runs in the first three innings.

An RBI single by Haley Rath, a groundout by Payton Alsobrooks, a wild pitch, and a groundout by Giselle Juarez during the first inning and a passed ball, a two-run single by Bailey Buechat, and a sacrifice fly by Juarez in the second inning fueled Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions’ offense early.

Mackenzie Whitten boosted her batting average thanks to a perfect 3-3 day at the plate to pace Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions. She singled in the first, second, and third innings.

Shaina Martin got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. She allowed two runs over four innings. Martin struck out one, walked none and gave up two hits.

#15 took the loss for Prescott . She allowed 14 runs in three innings, walked three and struck out four.

Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions tacked on another five runs in the third. The inning looked promising, as Whitten singled, bringing home Rachel Klein to kick things off.

Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions added three more runs in the top of the fourth. A clutch ground out scored Klein to open the scoring in the frame.

MOUNTAIN RIDGE 4 DESERT EDGE 1

Giselle Juarez struck out 13 batters to lift Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions to a 4-1 win over Desert Edge at Pioneer Park #5 in seven innings.

Jailene Carpio racked up three RBIs on one hit for Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions. She tripled in the third inning.

#23 was the game’s losing pitcher. She lasted just five innings, walked five, struck out two, and allowed four runs.

Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the third, scoring four runs on a groundout by Haley Rath and a three-run triple by Carpio.

Desert Edge scored its only run of the game on an RBI single by #23 in the fourth inning.

MOUNTAIN RIDGE 10 RINCON 0

Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions jumped out to an early lead on Rincon/University and captured a 10-0 victory on Saturday.

Five runs in the first three innings allowed Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions to put the game away early.

A two-run double by Payton Alsobrooks during the first inning and a passed ball in the second inning helped Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions put some runs on the board early.

Alsobrooks had a busy day at the plate, collecting three extra-base hits.

Giselle Juarez looked sharp in the circle. Juarez held Rincon/University hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out three.

Shaina Martin recorded the win for Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions. She pitched four shutout innings. She struck out one, walked three and surrendered four hits.

Alsobrooks, Ashley Williams and Mackenzie Whitten helped lead Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions. They combined for 10 hits and six RBIs.

#11 took the loss for Rincon/University . She lasted just two innings, walked two, struck out one, and allowed four runs.

Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions pushed one run across in each of the third, fourth and sixth. In the third, Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions scored on a groundout by Juarez, scoring Tiffany Williams.

Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions built upon its lead with three runs in the fifth. A ground out scored Williams to get Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions on the board in the inning. That was followed up by Williams’ single, bringing homeBailey Buechat.

MOUNTAIN RIDGE 1 PINNACLE 4

Giselle Juarez struck out eight batters, but Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions still fell to Pinnacle 4-1 in seven innings on Saturday at Pioneer Park #2.

#9 got the win for Pinnacle . She allowed one run over seven innings. She struck out 17, walked three and surrendered two hits.

Juarez was the game’s losing pitcher.

The game was never in doubt after the first, as Pinnacle scored two runs on a two-run triple by #14.

Pinnacle added two more runs in the top of the fourth. #20‘s single got things going, plating #11. That was followed up by #19‘s single, scoring #20.

In the fifth inning, Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions pushed across its only run of the day on an RBI double by Jailene Carpio.
