Multiple Teams · Ridge Baseball Takes Second in State

Mountain Ridge played in their first ever State Championship Game Tuesday night.  They were defeated 12-3 in a long and late game at Tempe Diablo stadium.

Mountain Ridge had been perfect in the playoffs up until Tuesday.  They defeated Hamilton 5-4 five days prior to the championship game, but this game never felt the same.  All the excitement and energy before the game – a large crowd full of bus loads of students and faculty, fans from all over the valley, scouts and TV cameras – put the Mountain Lions in an unfamiliar position: HYPED.  The team had been loose all season – through two prior tournaments and all the state tournament games to this point – but this game, they were wound up.  The team racked up 6 errors, most of which were early in the game, and they never scored until the 5th inning when they were already down 6-0.  The team never stopped fighting though.  They scored three runs in the final three innings, all off Hamilton’s #1 pitcher.

Even though Ridge didn’t win the championship, this has been a very good season – their best season to date!  At some point in the season they defeated every team they faced that was seeded in the top 16 seeds of the tournament. Some they defeated twice!  The team will get to hang two banners at the school for this season: One for winning the Division 1 Section 2 title and the other is for State Championship Runner Up.  No baseball team in school history has hung any banners before this year.
